Today's Quick Write Challenge!

Today is your chance to PRACTICE FLASHBACK!  Choose one of the options below and write a detailed FLASHBACK following the steps.

"Flashback Steps"

Step One: Begin in the present and "Setup the flashback"

Step Two: Signal the reader that you’re going back in time with a transition (such as "On the afternoon of..." or "It was July 6, 2004...") AND INCLUDE 'Setting Snapshot"

Step Three: Tell the "story" (Middle Action) of what happened in the flashback (the memory)

Step Four: Bring your reader back to the main storyline with a transition (such as "To this day..." or "That was then, this is now...")

Option One:

Imagine you live in a dystopian future where everything is broken and the world is a wasteland.  The amazing thing is that you have lived through the "times of old" where things flourished and life were plentiful.  People were happy and the world was a wonderful place to live. As you look at your surroundings you notice an object that sparks a distant memory.  Write the flashback that this object brings to life.

Option Two:

Write from the point of view of your future self thirty years from today. Technology has become so advanced that nothing looks the same.  School is different. Writing tools such as pens and pencils have been replaced with keyboards.  The kids of the day have never seen a "real" book since everything they read is on a screen.  People no longer drive cars but rather simply wear flying shoes to transport everywhere and nobody speaks to anyone else. All communication is done through text messaging!  For some strange reason someone tries to talk to you... it reminds you of the old days... Create the Flashback.
